An exhibition of dyed works by Patricia Sayuri Hokama Fogasa (28), a third-generation weaver of Okinawan descent living in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is being held at the gallery "PIN-UP" in Maehara, Ginowan City. Sayuri's maternal grandfather, Moriei Sotoma, 91, from Chinen, Nanjo, moved to Brazil with his mother in 1935 when he was nine years old. Three years ago, Sayuri came to Okinawa for the first time in search of her roots, and with the cooperation of the Okinawa-Brazil Society, she was able to fulfill her wish to meet her relatives. At that time, she met gallery owner Moriya Huda, 28, who is a distant relative of hers, and they decided to hold a solo exhibition.
A video of Kenzo Takada, the designer who founded the fashion brand KENZO, introducing Sayuri will be shown at the venue. She was chosen as one of several Brazilian artists to be featured in a promotional video for a global perfume maker.

The theme was "raiz tronco afeto. The theme is "raiz tronco afeto," which means "root," "tree trunk," and "hope" in Portuguese, and Sayuri explains, "I put in the feelings of an ancestor, who is the root or the trunk of a tree, wishing for the happiness of his descendants.
About 20 diverse works are on display. In addition to the prints shown in the photo, there are yukata tie-dyed with indigo and other colorful colors, but most of them are made of old fabrics. Many of the fabrics are old. "Old fabrics are the scars of immigrants who have gone through difficulties, hardships, and joys. It is based on this historical trend.

Biography
Patricia Sayuri, 28 anos, vive e trabalha em São Paulo. É artista visual formada pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas – UNICAMP.
Durante sua graduação trabalhou como figurinista para projetos em dança com apoio financeiro do ProaC – Programa de Ação Cultural do Governo do Estado de São Paulo, Projeto Novos Coreógrafos – Novas Criações: Site Specific, do Centro Cultural São Paulo e Bolsa Aluno-Artista SAE – UNICAMP.
Descobriu seu interesse por arte têxtil em 2011, quando estudou por 6 meses no curso de Indumentária e Têxtil da Universidad de Buenos Aires – UBA, Argentina.
Deu início à sua pesquisa em Shibori no ano de 2013, com o professor e artista plástico Celso Lima, e desenvolveu seus estudos da técnica durante seu TCC, intitulado Cicatrizes do Pano, apresentado em dezembro de 2013.
Em 2014 foi ao Japão para aprofundar suas pesquisas em Shibori e em Arte Têxtil Japonesa, e participou de workshops com Hiroshi Murase, mestre em Shibori no Japão, e Bryan Whitehead, mestre em arte têxtil e tingimento com Indigo.
Em 2015 ministrou workshops de Shibori na escola de criatividade Perestroika, em São Paulo, e na Feira Têxtil FASM 2015, realizada pela Faculdade de Moda Santa Marcelina.
Em 2016, foi artista selecionada em edital para a Exposição Conceito Coletivo, realizada na Galeria Fórum das Artes, em Botucatu - SP, e também para a exposição intitulada Uma Ideia Fixa que se Move, com curadoria de Célia Barros, realizada no mesmo local.
Foi figurinista do espetáculo This is Not About Me, de Gabriel Tolgyesi, contemplado pelo ProaC Primeiras Obras.
Artista selecionada no projeto Trama Afetiva - uma experiência colaborativa de aprendizagem em upcycling com foco em design, moda e empreendedorismo, sob orientação de Marcelo Rosembaum, Alexandre Herchcovitch e Patricia Centurion, realização da Fundação Hermman Hering e apoio da Cia. Hering.
Em 2017 ministrou o curso Shibori Experimental: técnicas de tingimento artesanal japonês, no Espaço de Tecnologia e Arte (ETA) do Sesc Campinas - SP.
